I’m just summing up what I have gathered since last two years and attempt to repost here. They are gathered from my research from lots of websites and some premium contents.
Here they are:
- Make sure the ads blends with the page contents and site layout. Made them looks like the site contents. The task is to tell the visitors that the ads are actually site’s content without telling them.
- Text ads are the best – better CTR on text ads then banner ads. They look like the page contents.
- Square ads performs better… according to most webmaster, wide banner ads unit having low CTR.
- Never display AdSense that looks like an ads. People hate ads by default. This sums up #1, #2, #3.
- Trigger the most relevant ads. Control keyword density of the page. Have title and headings <h1> with keywords. The chance ads being clicked when the ads are highly relevant to the topic – The crowds looking for “seo” will highly click on “increase traffic”, probably not on “gardening”.
- Match link unit with site’s navigation bar. Links unit are the best when blended perfectly.
- Endorsing the referral units wasn’t against AdSense TOS. Of course it’s encouraging the clicks.
- Track your record with channels. You are leaving money on the table when ignoring the channels. With channels you can track the best performing ads theme/colors, ads type and which one are best for your site. Use 3rd party tracker and have more stats on your performance. Figure out which page “topic” that actually brings more money.
- Above the fold rules. Above the fold was the part where visitor didn’t have to scroll when reaching your site. Visitors coming and see the ads… before reaching the actual contents… voila they click the ads.
- Increase traffic to increase the revenue.
- Choose the best performing topics, some topic could just bring 2 cent while others could reward $60 bucks per click… I recommend you to check Top Paying Keywords.
- Avoid “smart pricing” trap. Make sure the topics on the all your sites are clear. Having various categories in same page may hurt the overall revenue.
I’m writing tips with less description… Might be useful for your own quick checklist. If you have anything to ask just drop me some comments or add anything that I’ve missed.
