Mac OS X Tiger on my PC +Win XP dual boot

After a few weeks fooling around with brain cracking job (few times of repartitioning and reformatting hard disk and OSes re-installing), I finally success making Mac OS X Tiger (OSx86) to fully works on my PC. Thanks to osX86project.org community for providing all of the informations.

My configurations: […]
Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz (c) HT
2x 256MB DDR-RAM (512MB total)
MSI PT8 Neo - Via PT800 motherboard
Sapphire ATi Radeon X1650 PRO AGP 8x
160GB SATA H.D. (7 partitions, 6GB OS partition)

The ISO that fully works for me was JaS 10.4.8 with SSE2/SSE3 patch. To make Quartz Extreme and Core Image works on Sapphire ATi Radeon X1650 PRO AGP 8x I have used modbin installer.

I have tried with JaS 10.4.7 previosly but that ISO giving me the “still waiting for root device” error while booting.

To make dual boot working for me I just using Acronis OS Selector.

Experiencing Mac OS X for the first time, overall the perfomance was great! loads better than XP, booting and startup pretty fast. The font was soooo smooooth… dock magnifier, ripple effect awesome…

…i’ll post some snap shot later

Hi I’m workring with a pentium D 820 processor, and want to work on dual booting my system with xp and os X so if you could maybe run me through how you did what you did, and what hardware would be good for it and such…….also my biggest problem, will ddr2 and pci-x 16 harm the performance or prevent it from working, and if so what hardware would you suggest (looking in about the 200 range if I have to replace hardware, thanks for any help :)

      Hey, does the sound work?
Did you install any drivers for your Radeon x1650?

I have Radeon x1650 Pro on PCI Express.

      @Sean Mason

If you are looking for compatible hardware I suggest you check out hardware compatibility list at wiki.osx86project.org. Check which ISO will fully works with most of your hardwares may save a lot of effort.

I believe most of the mainstream hardware issues has been solved.

With JaS 10.4.8 with SSE2/SSE3 patch my AC’97 works.
Modbin installer (link above) mentioned that it supports PCI-E

Now I have just bought a new system yesterday with Core 2 Duo, PCI-E Radeon x1950GT. Curious to install OS X on them… lets figure it out.

Hey, thanks so much for the reply.

I have AC’97 also. Glad to know that should work.
Thanks for the tip on Modbin installer too.

Does your Internet work? I have Netgear FA311 and the osx86project.org claims it will work.
If your Internet does work did you have any trouble getting it set up?

      I have a DSL connection.

I have Ethernet onboard, ViaRhine comes with Via 8377 chipset. It not works with Jas 10.4.8 iso by default.

Luckily there is a MacRhine driver crated by Pinxue at Pinxue.net.

For quick & foolproof solution in Win XP, you may try installing Acronis Disk Director Suite that comes with Acronis OS Selector.

Another quick method enabling dual boot Win XP + OS x86, just set the OS x86 partition to be Active/Bootable. While Darwin loading the MBR you may select to boot from another partition by press (I forgot the key :P ) button.

There is also boot.ini+Chain0 method reported to be works well, but I can’t make it works myself on my machine.

I’m a little dissapointed because I recently bought a graphic card. Powercolor X1650 Pro 512 MB AGP but I had no success with my card and OS X. I never noticed about the installer you’re linking so I’m gonna try it and see what happens; thank you for the info.

Perhaps a little advice when considering a new hardware (chipset/graphic card, etc.) to buy.

Check the hardware that has been reported works with auto install driver available.

Me too end up buying a new hardware that didn’t work. I only figured out the x1900 series yet never made fully working yet due to the architecture after installing OSX 10.4.8.

i tried to erase only 1 partition for Mac OS, but it did not work. I’ve read that all disk must be free; so how can i keep my Windows Xp to work with both OSs ? Can ya tell me?

      @dzunglv

Are you getting “HFS partition error” during the boot?

In my experience, this happend when the active partition wasn’t OSX86 partition or Darwin being installed in the other partition.

There’s a simple fix for this error, (sudo HG^$^^78q, sorry I forgot) just Google it man.

To avoid this error simply make the OSX86 partition active, and hide all other partitions before installing it. Thus will make Darwin installed within OSX86 partition. Reactivate all partitions after OSX86 working properly. With these configuration Acronis OS Selector can easily make the dual boot menu.

If you read that all disk must be free then you probably have read an outdated article.

okay, thanks. Now it worked and i surely have read an outdated one. ^^

      Your spec similarly to mine.

To install OS X for PC:
      1. partition your hard disk, preferably with GParted Live CD or Acronis Disk Director or Partition Magic.
      2. Format the partition for OS X as FAT32
      3. Make active the desired OS X partition
      4. Use the properly burned ISO of OS X while booting and make sure you’re booting from CD.
      5. Follow Mac installation instruction.
      6. Mac ask for partition but you dont have the disk available in the menu. Re-format the partition. Open DISK TOOL app. (menu above) and format FAT32 partition into Mac OSX (Journaling)
      7. Close disk tool and select the Mac OS X formatted disk.
      8. Never allow default setting, choose to customize the installation.
      9. Choose the required patch for your CPU, GPU drivers etc.
      10. Wait till everything installed, restart.
      11. Finished.

I installer OSX Tiger and Vista and I use Acronis OS Selector. Every thing works great with OSX…the sound, internet..everything!

But if you want to load vista and OSX Tiger, after creating your FAT 32 partition, go to diskpart:

      1 - List disk
2 - select disk x (x= you number of disk)
3- list partition (it will show you the partitions on your selected disk)
4- select partition x (select the partition you made for OSX)
5 - id=AF (it will change the format of you partition to AF so you can install ypur OSX Tiger on it)

6 - active (it will activate the partition to be the first to boot up)

and the rest is easy with the istaller

      bye
